With more than 4 billion DLNA-certified products on the market—including TVs, Blu-ray players, storage devices, media boxes, smartphones, tablets, game consoles and software—chances are good you already have more than one compliant device or application in your home.
If you own a recent model PC, NAS, smartphone, or tablet, it probably came with bundled DLNA-certified software that will allow any media on it to be recognized by your networked components. If you have an older model, however, you can still turn it into a media server by adding a program like Plex , Twonky , TVersity , or Windows Media Player.
Another area where DLNA gets messy is codecs. To make it more complicated, different implementations of DLNA support different codecs. You can access all your media by selecting first the source from where you want to play.
BubbleUPnP segregates all your songs, videos and images into folders. You can click on the file you want to stream. Once you select the file, the app will start streaming it on to your TV. You can either select one file or create a playlist of your preference. You can also control the volume of the TV, with the help of the volume keys present on your phone.
Skipping through the video or song is also possible. Some Smart TVs do not even need a router as a medium to stream media files from a smartphone. To do this, you need to have a smart TV and a smartphone that support Miracast.
This technology uses Wi-Fi Direct to stream content and is great for use in short distances such as in a living room. However, DLNA is clearly on its way out. Apple devices have never supported DLNA without third-party software. DLNA was built for a world where local media was king, not a world of online video services, music-streaming sites, photo-sharing sites, and a devices with their own screens you might want to share.
If you use local media files at home, you can still use DLNA to play media files -- at least some of them -- across your devices.
