Also, wear lightweight clothing to stay cool at the airport and pack a sweater for the long flight back to the mainland. Updates can never match the frequency of travel. Those two qualities led to nightmare scenarios in the summer of , when storms affected flights and traffic jams leading into the airport had passengers walking along the highway to get to their gates on time. There was nobody at Delta to help me and I was so scared because all my identification, medications, and my last paycheck were all in that bag. I was desperately looking for help. Then the sweetest man, an agent who checks boarding passes right before TSA, helped me. He was patient, calmed me down, was quick, efficient, and most importantly he actually found my purse.
I know I got really lucky because it was the plane's last stop, but if I hadn't come across someone as kind I probably would have never gotten it back.
I thank him and everyone who was involved in recuperating my purse from the bottom of my heart. You all could have chosen to take it, steal the contents, or just thrown it in the trash but everybody had a lot of good in them that night. Negligent, rude, inefficient, dismissive. The lack of professionalism should not be excused. All NYC airport staff generally rank low in terms of attitude and manners.
On this occasion I had booked NYC as a family holiday and left by the end of the week feeling so upset. A woman and man working at security shouted at my and my family completely unnecessarily. They demanded we fold down our pram with my sleeping 1 year old baby in it and then shouted at us to get her out and the to move on immediately whilst other members of staff watched with complete indifference and smiled. It was a horrible horrible experience. They created an unbelievably tense and hostile environment, which the staff almost fed off.
Rather than building one large terminal to be shared by all airlines, it was decided by the airlines that each airline was to build its own terminal and compete for the business of travelers on their unique architecture. This pre-jet era decision gave JFK the fragmented, disconnected terminal structure it is still known for today.
Despite terminals being demolished and rebuilt over the years, the core structure remained the same. Each passenger terminal remains it's own mini-airport within an airport, a decision that would set the airports inefficiencies in stone for decades to come.
The disconnected nature of JFK makes transferring between flights a potential nightmare for passengers. Whereas most modern airports are made up of one of two major terminals shared by all airlines, JFK sports six passenger terminals.
Transferring between them is a confusing and time-consuming process. Forget about transiting to any of the major airports in New York City if you're re-booked, too.
Doing so by public transit is a frustrating and time consuming process. The new facility will have, according to the Port Authority, modern amenities, more concession space and wider concourses to improve passenger throughput, as well as 33 common-use gates to accommodate airlines. New facilities will include larger waiting areas, new retail, restaurants and bars, free high-speed WiFi and charging stations. Though long overdue, Gelinas says the planned and ongoing upgrades over the next two to three years will solve the majority of problems passengers currently experience.
In the longer term, Gelinas says all three airports will face further capacity problems on the runways, which will struggle to handle an increasing level of traffic demand. However, she notes that there are other ways to address this issue besides building new runways, such as bigger, better high-speed rail to replace short-haul flights or more efficient traffic control systems that enable planes to be spaced closer together.
This could, they claim, create more competition between the three airports and incentivise lower costs and better efficiency. However, Gelinas disagrees with this premise. Furthermore, she adds, terminals are already profitable and not hugely inefficient, so little benefit could be derived from privatisation. But once complete, they will hopefully match up to the impeccable international reputation of the city they serve.
